K3G-Right film for the wrong Audience

At the end of each year the biggest families in Bollywood get together and put up their wares for the film going audiences. This tradition has continued for generations right from Sholay to Mohabbatein and recently K3G-Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghaam is the latestfrom the Bharjatyas-Johars-Chopras combine. These filmi families are some of the finest salesmen in Bollywood and K3G is another example of their excellent business mind. |
I went to see K3G with an open mind expecting nothing at the same time expecting everything to hit me and I returned with mixed feelings. In filmi aspects it was the Best of Bollywood right from Chandni to kuch Kuch to DDLJ ,K3G was a healthy mixture of the Best of the Best of Bollywood |
It had romance Kuch Kuch style in the beginning with Rani again playing second fiddle. Later it morphed into DDLJ type of Parent-trouble with all the necessary emotions and tension. With Hrithik's and Kareena's introduction it became a Hum Apke Hain Kaun romance story with Shahrukh and Kajol as bhaiya-bhabi….and finally to finish everything off a family reunion(yawn!) Bharjatya is-htyle. One thing still stands out no matter what Ajay Devgan says SRK and Kajol are indeed the match made in Heaven but separated on Earth. |
The Highs and Lows |
But K3G excels in some departments and also sets the benchmark for 2002 and cries out loudly "Beat This!". Its technically brilliant, no doubt about that, the camera setting set design and costumes are simply…..heavenly. Having a start cast of the present who's-who of Bollywood does help K3G, with each actor/actress trying their best to outdo each other. Each have their roles clearly spelt out and nobody tries anything different though this may sound simple but in the end this becomes the films forte. |
Shahrukh is the prancing romantic boy and later the boss of the house. Kajol is another seedhi-sadhi house wife while being the Khan's love interest in early parts of the film. Hrithik is his usual biceps-flexing stud and with an equal b**** (oops!)-flexing Kareena. The oldie-goldies AB and JB play the passé generation parents with Bachhan Sahib playing the Angry Old Man (again, third time now after Mohabb.., Ek Rishta).the story is nothing but a remake of the old Valmiki hit, Ramayana with the loyal son (Shahrukh) undergoing exile and the dutiful brother (Hrithik) vowing to bring back his brother from exile. But watching buckets of tears flow from everyone tears raises a question in everyone's mind.."Did I pay Rs.50 just to watch people cry ?" |
NRI's are King. |
One thing still hits the audience as the second half starts. This film is not for the Indian masses. The UK settings et all, try and remind the audiences that NRI's are still very much Indians at heart and that family values still rated high. The film is aimed at oversees revenue generation and it has achieved this -presently its No.2 in the UK Top Ten and still going strong. In targeting the Indian audiences it stretches the limit which is not required…like the Indian National Anthem being played at school functions in the middle of Englishmen. All this and more just makes the film dish out more masala nothing else. The film has taken 15 crores to make and no harm in targeting the high revenue overseas sector than the Lowman. |
Setting New Standards |
K3G does deserve one distinction which I have never given to any other film.. It made a tear roll down my cheek. Though I didn't break down I could see many in the cinema hall pull out their hankies often. Jaya Bachhan has done an OUTSTANDING job in the movie. Shahrukh cries too often and Hrithik looks stupid when he starts crying. K3G is an emotional drainer and expect to be drawn into it emotionally from the first scene. For 2002 this will be the film to beat. |
